Steve Thummel April 05, 1948 – February 26, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI – Steve Thummel, 70, died Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at his home in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born April 5, 1948 at Larned, Kansas, the son of Matthew T. and Rita C. (Fox) Thummel. He was a longtime Dodge City, Kansas resident, a graduate of Dodge City High School.

He served in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1970 doing 3 tours in Vietnam. He was a manger for Dillons Stores for 38 years working in Great Bend, Greensburg and Dodge City. In 2002, he went to work for the Ford County Sheriff’s Office, retiring in 2009.

He moved to Kansas City in 2014. He was a life member of the VFW and American Legion, Peace Officers Association, CASA and a volunteer for Hospice of the Prairie in Dodge City. On March 31, 1984 he married Delita Howerton in Dodge City.

Survivors include: his wife, Delita, Kansas City; 2 sons, Aaron Thummel and wife Danyelle, Kansas City; his granddaughter, Adalynn Thummel, Kansas City; and Bryce Thummel and wife Rachel, Port Orchard, Washington; a brother, Alfred Thummel, Garden City, Kansas; and a sister, Mary Kay Ricke and husband Steve, Wichita, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Julian Thummel-Huckabay. Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.

Inurnment will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Ft. Dodge, with full military honors by the United States Navy and Howard Gotschall VFW Post 1714. There will be no public viewing, cremation has taken place.

Friends may sign the register from Noon to 5:00 pm Monday at Ziegler Funeral Chapel. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of the Prairie in care of Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave. , Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
