Obituary for Susan S Kindig Susan Friend Kindig (nee Sheppard) died peacefully on December 15, 2018 at Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber in Columbus, Ohio at the age of 100. Susan was born on May 3, 1918 in Washington Courthouse, Ohio to Jonathan Ernest Sheppard and Nelle Bess (Cochran) Sheppard. She graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelors Degree in Education and Masters Degree in Reading.

Susan married Harold Friend in 1938 and raised their two children on a farm outside Sedalia, Ohio. Susan worked for Midway Elementary as a 5th Grade Teacher. She was a generous individual who was passionate about educating students.

Susan later served as Gifted/Special Education Supervisor for Madison County until she was 70 years old. After Harold passed away in 1973, she later met Fred Kindig on a blind date arranged by a colleague whom happened to be Fred’s daughter. They married in 1980, lived in Worthington, Ohio and travelled the world extensively.

Susan remembers her mother, Nelle, as a mother that was always there for her. And, Susan’s children feel the very same about their mother. Lee and Judy remember her as a grateful mother that loved the educational field and made family her priority.

No wonder Thanksgiving was her favorite holiday! Susan loved to read, especially mystery novels. She enjoyed Big Band music and doing the Fox Trot, Waltz and Square & Round Dance.

Susan’s fondest memories of both husbands was on the dance floor! Susan is preceded in death by her first husband, Harold L. Friend and second husband, Frederick E. Kindig. Susan is survived by her children, Harold “Lee” (Debbie) Friend, Jr. of Grove City, Ohio and Judith F. Wing of Columbus, Ohio; her step-children, Pamela Kindig of San Diego, California, Bonnie (Chris) Toll of Stow, Ohio, Gretchen (Charles) Thomas of Mariemont, Ohio, and Suzanne (Greg) Bowman of Jenks, Oklahoma; her grandchildren, Kelly (Adam) Berlin, Melissa O’Brien; her step-grandchildren, Chase Thomas, Chelsea (Adam) Fagin, Brad Bowman, and Whitney (Richard) Webb; her great-grandchildren, Gabriel O’Brien, and Logan Webb.
