Tom Brown lived a full and largely satisfying life. He was born in Richmond, Indiana in 1932, travelled the world, served others when he could, and died peacefully in Silver Spring, Maryland on October 8, 2018. After graduating from Tufts University Tom served in the Air Force and later worked for 30 years at the US Department of Labor.

At DOL, he was instrumental in securing workplace protections for workers through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Worker’s Compensation Programs. As he was fond of saying, he was “an unrepentant bureaucrat”. Throughout his life he traveled and volunteered his time, often through the 8th Day Community.

Tom particularly enjoyed teaching math skills to adult students working to earn their GED and participating in L’Arche communities in Washington and abroad. As he aged, he regretfully “retired from retirement” and settled into community life with other retirees where he continued to pursue his interests in inter-cultural equality, history, meditation, and debating theological points with his peers. Tom is remembered with love and appreciation by his family and close companions.

All who knew him will long remember his good works, active intelligence, integrity and commitment to service. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 5101 16th Street NW, Washington DC on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 2:00. Memorial donations may be made to Academy of Hope, L’Arch of Greater Washington, Silver Spring Zendo, Southern Poverty Law Center, American Civil Liberties Union or the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
