Obituary for Thomas G. Ikins Thomas Gifford Ikins II, 69, of Powell, Ohio, died at home surrounded by his family and beloved dogs on September 3rd, 2018. A native of Clinton, Ohio, he was retired from Careworks Consultants where he worked for 15 years with his wife of 25 years, Janice Meyer Ikins. Born December 13th 1949 in Massillon, Ohio to the late Sarah Graham and Thomas Gifford Ikins, he was raised in Clinton, attended Clinton Elementary and graduated from Northwest High School, class of 1967.
He attended the University of Akron and studied chemistry and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) fraternity. Entering employment as an adhesives chemist with Bostik Adhesives, he was highly successful in creating new products and solving problems. His coin collecting avocation later led to a career as a professional numismatist, working at Gothic Coins in Akron and Canton for several years as well as for himself.
Marrying his wife Jan in Canton in 1993, they moved to Powell, Ohio in 1998. His interest in history led him to become expert on analyzing modern British place names and deducing their Roman origins. He solved many geographic riddles regarding historic Roman sites, in one case leading to the discovery of a previously unknown military camp.
His treatise on Roman Britain place names was a work in progress at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Janice; daughters Elizabeth (Matthew) Pecikonis; Michelle McCarty (grandchildren Lance, Madeline, and Brady) and son Thomas Gifford Ikins III; sister Cindy (Francis M.) Ikins Letro of Buffalo NY; and brother Colonel Charles (the late Deborah) Ikins USMCR (Ret) of Clinton. Visitation will be on Friday September 7th from 11 AM – 2 PM at Rutherford Funeral Home, 450 West Olentangy Street, Powell, Ohio.
