OBITUARY Vera “Poppe” M. Jones March 29, 1923 – October 14, 2018 Vera “Poppe” M. Jones, age 95, of Wheat Ridge, Colorado passed away on Sunday October 14, 2018. “Poppe” was born March 29, 1923 to Henry and Lydia Poppe in Caledonia, Minnesota, that’s in the southeast corner of the state. She was born on a 200 acre farm, she had 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
Vera went to a one room school house that she had to walk a mile to get to. She went thru the 8th grade. She lived 7 miles from town and had no transportation to get to high school.
So she worked several jobs over a few years, till she had a opportunity to attend the school of Agriculture in St. Paul to finish her education. She attended school for 6 months and worked for 6 months for 4 years. Vera joined the last class of the nurse cadet program that was in Rochester, MN.
It was a 3 year nursing program. She graduated in 1948, the war had ended so she did not have to serve in the military. So she went to work, her job was night supervisor in a hospital in Rochester.
Then she and a classmate decided to see the country and ended up Colorado, that was in 1950. She first worked in Boulder then came to Denver. She worked at Presbyterian hospital and St. Joseph’s.
She retired from St. Jo’s in 1979, having been the head nurse in the ER for 10 years. Vera was married, she has 2 sons, Jeff (Jeanette) Jones, and Brad Jones, 3 grandchildren; Tracie (Gary) Sack, Dawn (Troy) Gerk and Cody Jones, 4 great grandchildren; Tyler Sack, Lindsay Sack, Kylie Gerk, and Ali Gerk. Vera raised her family in the Commerce City area.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry & Lydia Poppe, brothers, Vince, Harold, and Dale, sisters, Erma, Norma, and Ruby. After she retired she sold her house in Commerce City and bought a cottage in our independent living. At the time you bought the cottages, now they are rented.
Vera lived in the cottages for 35 years until she moved up here in July of last year. After Vera retired and moved to the cottages she went to work at Mountain Vista working there from 1980 to 1988. Vera was a long time member of Wheat Ridge Lutheran Church and enjoys visits from her Pastor and church friends.
Vera is also a sport enthusiasts, enjoying all types of sports. Vera has many nieces and nephews mostly in Minnesota and enjoys their phone calls and visits. A memorial service for “Poppe” will be held Monday, October 22, 2018 at 10:30 AM at Wheat Ridge Lutheran Church, 8600 West 38th Ave.
