Vermilda Marie Leckband 97, formerly of Preston passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Maquoketa Care Center where she had been a resident since March of 2014. She was born on June 10, 1921 in rural Jackson County, the daughter of Leo and Frances (Michels) Feller. Her parents were farmers and Jimmie, as she was known, attended country school through the 8th grade.

Friends may call on Thursday, December 20, 2018 from 9:30 – 10:30 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Preston, IA. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. following the visitation. Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Preston, Iowa.

Lahey and Dawson Funeral Service is caring for the family at this time. She married Robert Hendricks of Welton on October 3, 1942 in Kahoka, MO. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the US Army and was killed in action on March 29, 1945, less than six weeks before the end of WWII in Europe.

On June 2, 1948 he married Milford (Tut) Leckband, a carpenter, and they made their home in Preston. The two later ran Tut and Jim’s Tavern until Milford’s death on May 9, 1967. Jimmie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a 65 year member of the Preston American Legion Auxiliary.

She enjoyed traveling, quilting, crosswords and cold beer. Surviving are two daughters; Carol (Jim) Round of Maquoketa and Dr. Sandra Leckband of Dayton, OH; four grandchildren, Rene Round, Dawn Heller, Wade Round and Amy Round; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Orville Feller and her sister, Marcellene Etringer.
