A Mother holds her children’s hands for a little while, but their hearts forever… Verna Lucy (Seymour) Swimelar, 98, of Waverly, NY passed away on January 28th, 2019. Verna was born on January 23rd, 1921 in Tioga Center, NY a daughter of the late Earl and Edith (Stetler) Seymour. On June 7, 1939 she married, Leroy Swimelar and together they shared 39 years of marriage.

In 1942, during World War II Verna went to work at Eclipse in Elmira there she assembled parts for bombs ~ she was a true Rosie Riverter. A dedicated and hard worker, Verna was employed at Grand Union, the A & P and Pages. For many years, she worked with the Waverly Senior Citizens thru the Waverly Recreation Department under the direction of Joseph Cummings where she was active in the well-being of the seniors of Waverly.

Verna enjoyed playing cards, reading and crocheting. She was an avid bowler and loved the New York Mets. Although her greatest love, was being surrounded by her family ~ and spending time at the cabin in Lockwood and later Little Lake in Odessa.

Mom, your life was full of loving deeds, forever thoughtful of our special needs. We will always love and cherish you. Verna will be greatly missed by her children: Janet and Ron Keene, Linda Vough and Mac McGlothlin, Leroy Swimelar, Jr., and Philip Swimelar; her grandchildren: Wendy Keene, Gregory (Renee) Keene, James (Niki) Swimelar, Shelley Swimelar, John (Michelle) Vough, David (Jill) Vough; great grandchildren: Alan, Erica, Kedra, Kiya, Kalysta, Amico, Rhiannon, Emerson, Colton, Mason, Brecken and Rowen; a special cousin Marjorie Rider; several nieces, nephews and their families also survive.

She was predeceased by her husband Leroy on December 20, 1978; her son James R. Swimelar on April 23, 2018; a son-in-law, John Vough; a great grandson Jace Carlton Vough; siblings: William (Irene) Seymour, Hilton (Elizabeth) Seymour, Evelyn (John) Miller, Ralph (Joan) Seymour and Irving (Elizabeth) Seymour. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Saturday, February 9th from 11 to 1 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. A celebration of a life well lived will follow at 1 pm with Pastor Helen Learn of the Athens United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in the Nichols Cemetery. Memories, condolences and a favorite photo of Verna’s life may be shared by visiting her guest book at www. sutfinfuneralchapel.
