Vess Albert Powell, Jr., 88, of 2033 W. Stagecoach Trail, Shelby, passed away Monday, December 17, 2018 at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby. Born in Cleveland County, on June 8, 1930 he was a son of the late Vess Albert Powell, Sr. and Inez McKee Powell. He was a self-employed farmer and member of Polkville Baptist Church and Camp Call Masonic Lodge 534.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Whisnant Powell; son Gary Powell and wife Marilyn of Polkville; daughter, Sherry Lawson and husband Frank of Ellenboro; sister, Elaine Horn and husband Bill of Shelby; three grandchildren, Kelly Morris and husband Josh, Laura Gammons and husband Patrick, and Kim Collins and husband Randall and six great-grandchildren Cade Morris, Eva Raine Morris, Harper Gammons, McCoy Gammons, Easton Collins, and Landon Collins.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1:00 pm to 2:00 PM at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home, Fallston. The funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Edward Lee officiating.

The burial will follow the service in the Polkville Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Polkville Baptist Church, PO Box 245, Polkville, NC 28136. Condolences may be made online at www.
