Obituary for Victor Jay Basso VICTOR JAY BASSO, MD Victor Jay Basso, age 79, of Humble, Texas, passed away from Alzheimer’s-related complications on December 13, 2018 in Kingwood, Texas. Jay, as he was known to family and long-time friends, or Dr. B, as he was known during his time working as an ophthalmologist in Webster, Texas is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandra Lee Basso (79), daughter Susan Basso McCauley (43), grandson Alexander Richard McCauley (9), son-in-law Richard A. McCauley, Jr. (48), dogs Cinnamon and Megan, and cats Cassie and Geneva. Jay was preceded in death by his parents Vittorio Basso and Maxine Stuck Basso, his brother Robert Vincent Basso, and his grandparents Angela Rosasco Basso, Vittorio Basso, Lottie McKee Stuck and Ralph Stuck, and many beloved pets.
Jay was born on May 13, 1939, in Muncie, Indiana. He was a 1958 graduate of Kimball High School in Royal Oak, Michigan; a 1962 graduate of the University of Michigan (Bachelor of Science); and a 1967 graduate of Wayne State University (MD in ophthalmology). He and his wife, Sandy, were married in Berkley, Michigan, on June 3, 1967.
Jay was a lieutenant in the United States Navy from 1968–1971 during the Vietnam War and was stationed at the Naval Operations Base in Norfolk, Virginia. From 1971-1973 Jay did his ophthalmology residency at Kresge Eye Institute and Detroit Receiving Hospital. In 1973, he and Sandy settled in Nassau Bay, Texas, where Jay was in private practice from 1973-1998.
During his years in private practice, Jay would travel to Central America to donate equipment and surgical services to the people of Belize. Dr. B is credited with developing a diamond blade, which was, in its time, an innovation in radial keratotomy (RK) surgery. In 1998, Jay retired due to diabetic complications.
Jay achieved his biggest dreams—overcoming dyslexia—to become a top-rated ophthalmologist who never lost an eye due to surgical complications in one of his patients, a husband to Sandy, a father to Susie, and a grandfather to Alex. He will be remembered for his intelligence, his love of boats, music and high-end stereo, walking, guns, photography, practical jokes, and his quirky sense of humor, which endured to the very end. We are sad to have lost him, but are very grateful to have had him in our lives.
A graveside funeral will be held at Houston National Cemetery located at 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, Texas 77038 on Thursday, December 20 at 1:45pm.
