Obituary for Virginia Manteuffel Virginia Manteuffel, 80, of Warren, died Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren, following a year-long battle against kidney cancer. She was born in Detroit on October 18, 1938 (her mother’s 32nd birthday), to Ervin and Marvel (Nelson) Oswald. She married Alfred Manteuffel, Jr., son of Alfred and Grethe (Petersen) Manteuffel, on August 6, 1960, at St. Thomas and St. Peter Lutheran Church in Detroit.

Mrs. Manteuffel graduated from Michigan Lutheran Seminary high school in Saginaw, and in 1960 from Concordia Teacher’s College (now Concordia University) in River Forest, Illinois, later obtaining a Master’s in Education from Michigan State University. An illustrious and rewarding teaching career of nearly 50 years took place at schools in Illinois, Michigan, and a six-year stint in the mid-1990’s in rural Kansas, in which she taught the lower grades in a two-room schoolhouse and also served as principal. Her last position was with Cornerstone Schools in Detroit, first as a teacher, and later as a librarian.

She enjoyed solving word puzzles, watching Jeopardy! , traveling, playing Scrabble, and having her bacon “so crisp that it shatters”. She was a long-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Royal Oak.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Al; three children, Kathi (George) Seidl of Ferndale; Kristin (Bill) Trewhella of Warren; and Scott (Beth) Manteuffel of Center Line; seven grandchildren: Michael (Lauryn) Seidl of Ferndale and Kyle (Jesse) Bradford of Novi, Amy (Billy) Bingham of Eastpointe, Katy Jo (Jon) VandenEnyde of Harper Woods, and Christopher, Daniel, and Eric Trewhella, all of Warren; great-grandchildren Aubrey and Kayden Bingham, Lily VandenEnyde, and baby girl Holly Seidl, due in December 2018. She is also survived by her sister Lynda (Gordie) Golchert, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and “bonus daughter” Tracy Takacs. She was preceded in death by her parents and infant son, Michael.

A memorial service will be held on November 10, 2018, 11:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Royal Oak. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Mrs. Manteuffel’s name to St. Paul Lutheran School or the American Cancer Society.
