Walter’s Obituary West Leyden – Walter John Kaido, 93, of State Route 26, passed away March 20, 2019 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born at the family homestead on Route 26 on March 30, 1925, a son of Thomas and Pauline Mefelski Kaido. He attended West Leyden School and on September 20, 1952, he married Eleanor Swistak at the Transfiguration Church in Rome.

After their marriage they settled at his family homestead where they operated a dairy farm until 1965 and a hobby farm thereafter. Walt was a professional carpenter by trade and for many years worked with the local Carpenters Union 747. Walt took pride in his work and was skilled in a variety of construction trades.

He enjoyed maintaining his property, woodworking, ATV riding, and spending time outdoors. He found pleasure in using his skills to help his children with their home projects. Walt and Eleanor traveled extensively, both domestic and abroad, and while he was eager to experience other places, he always loved to return home.

Walt was a member of St. Mary’s Nativity Church, West Leyden, Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, Life Member of the Rome Polish Home, and a Member of the United Polka League of the Mohawk Valley. He served on the West Leyden School Board for several years, was a past member of the West Leyden Fire Department, and a former Justice of the Peace for the Town of Lewis. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife, Eleanor, and his children Michael and Donna Kaido, West Leyden; Janet Kaido, Syracuse; Carole and William Iseneker, Sherrill; Patrice and Mark Haley, Lyons; Peter and Dollie Kaido, Verona; Elaine and Thomas Szot, Western Springs, IL; 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Walt was predeceased by two brothers; Joseph and Chester, as well as five sisters; Lottie Mack, Betty Kaido, Cecelia Chrzanowski, Angeline Toper, and Sophia Riegler. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 27 at St. Mary’s Nativity Church, West Leyden. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the Mass at the Church.

Burial will be in Prussian Settlement Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413 or Prussian Settlement Cemetery, PO Box 423, West Leyden, NY 13489. Mills Funeral Home, Boonville is entrusted with the arrangements.
