Wanda Lou Galyon-Homewood, 90, passed away on January 25, 2019. Visitation is set for 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Jenkins Funeral Home, Burnet, Texas. A funeral Service is planned for 1:30 p.m., Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Jenkins Funeral Home with interment to follow at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park, Burnet, Texas It is with both profound sadness and joy at the promise of everlasting life that we announce the passing of Wanda Lou Rose Galyon Homewood, Friday, January 25, 2019, in San Antonio, TX.
Wanda spent her life as a devoted and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Born Wanda Lou Rose Downey on July 28, 1928, in Borger, TX to Katie Collins Downey and William C. Downey. She was the youngest of six children, four brothers and a sister.
A child of the great depression, she spent her childhood on a dairy farm surrounded by her older brothers and the farm animals. She developed a life long love of all animals, and they loved her. She had a special affinity for dogs.
She loved them and they adored her. She always had at least one dog in her home. Graduating from Borger High School in 1945, she and her mom and dad moved to Houston, TX.
On June 1, 1946, she married her high school sweetheart, C.E. Galyon Jr. in Long Beach, CA. For the next year and a half they resided in the San Francisco Bay area where he was stationed with the U. S. Navy. On April 27, 1947, she became a mother for the first time with the birth of her son, Clinton Edward Galyon.
Six months later, upon C.E.’s discharge from the Navy, the young family returned home to Houston, TX. Wanda and C.E. welcomed their second child, Debbie Gaye Galyon, on May 18, 1951. Wanda relished the role as a full-time mother, never working out of the home until her children were grown.
She then worked for the Houston Independent School District as an attendance secretary for Rogers Jr. High School until her retirement in the middle 80’s. Upon her retirement, Wanda and C.E. moved permanently to their dream home on Inks Lake in Buchanan Dam, TX. There they lived in their self-made paradise until C.E.’s sudden passing in January of 1990, at the very young age of 62.
Wanda was never one to dwell on tragedy. Always the optimist, she continued her life at the lake, enjoying her many friends and family. Not one to sit around, she discovered an interest in oil painting.
Over a period of about 5 years she developed a remarkable talent and became a prolific artist. In 1996, Wanda decided to make another life change with the second love in her life. In September of that year she married Charles L. Homewood (Chuck), a retired Army officer and Civil Servant.
Wanda and Chuck continued living on Inks Lake, enjoying the love of friends and family until Chuck’s untimely passing in June, 1999. Wanda again found herself widowed, but knowing God’s promise, continued to live a happy and contented life. Sometime in the early years of the new millennium, Wanda was diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
Still being the optimist and fighter that she was, she continued her life at the lake, completely involved with her church, her friends, and her family. In 2008, unable to live on her own any longer, she moved to a senior living home in San Antonio. The home specialized in memory care and was close to her children, Clint and Debbie.
Even though she could no longer live on her beloved lake, she built a life in the community and was active in all the activities. Even through the tragic loss of her daughter, Debbie, in 2015, Wanda bravely and stubbornly fought the disease until the end. Wanda is survived by her son, Clinton E. Galyon and his wife, Nancy.
Four grandchildren: Derek A. Galyon, Darian A. Acord and husband, Mike, Desirae A. Martinez and husband, Chris, and Brandy D. Aiello. Seven great grandchildren: Marissa Ryan Pickens, Jason Michael Robinson, Carson Howard Davis, Camron Stephen Davis, Dani Lynn Galyon, Preston Clint Martinez, and Riley Rose Martinez. Arrangements under the care of Jenkins Funeral Home, formerly Edgar Funeral Home, Burnet, Texas.
