W.D. “Dub” Goins died peacefully on Monday, June 18, 2018, at his home in Farmington, NM, with his family around him. He was born at home in Big Cabin, OK to Herman and Opal Marie (Page) Goins on June 3, 1929. He attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse in Blue Hawk District, OK.

He then continued his schooling in Vinita, OK where he graduated in 1949. During his second year of college, he received his draft notice. He then volunteered, and entered the Army in February 1951.

After basic he served as a specialty clerk until he joined the Army traveling football team and toured Europe. He was discharged in February 1953. He met Delores Spurlin his senior year of high school, and they married June 20, 1952.

After his Army service, they moved to Tahlequah, OK and Dub graduated from Northeastern State College in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree, and then a Masters in Education in 1961. He began his teaching and coaching career in Missouri and moved to Bloomfield NM in 1963. While with the Bloomfield School District, he taught PE and driver’s ed while coaching several sports, but most loved coaching football at both Mesa Alta Junior High and Bloomfield High.

From 1974 until his retirement in 1988, he served as the district Athletic Director and BHS Vice-Principal. Coach, as he was affectionately called by many students he coached and mentored, was named NMHSCA Athletic Director of the year for 1984, and was nominated for National High School Athletic Director of the Year. Dub was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Delores, his daughter Fran Parrick, sisters Betty Abbott, Mary Deaton and Nancy Shadbolt, brothers Richard, Dennis and Roger Goins, and his mother-in-law Frankie Smith.

He is survived by his son David Goins, his daughters Paula (Leo) Francisco, Pennye Goins, and Linda Grant-Trottier. He was the proud grandpa to 11 wonderful young people: Duncan Goins, Baeley DeRooy, Phillip (Glynna) Francisco, Matthew (Selma) Francisco, Alex (Julia) Francisco, Kelly (Brandon Chavez) Francisco-Armenta, Gettye Goins, Mitchell (Melanie) Goins, Leah Kessler, Justin Schexnayder, Alisha (Lance) Richard. There are 20 great-grandchildren.

There will be a viewing Friday, June 22 from 3pm to 5pm at Farmington Funeral Home, 2111 W Apache. Services will be Saturday, June 23 at 1pm, also at Farmington Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
