Wilbert’s Obituary Wilbert J. Taylor was called to Heaven on Saturday, December 15, 2018. He was born June 18, 1926, in Whitakers, North Carolina to Winnie Taylor and Sam Jones. He was raised in New York by two aunts and his grandmother after losing his mother at the tender age of nine.

He completed school in the New Rochelle, New York School System which he would later sue on behalf of his children for desegregation and win. Later in life he graduated from Manhattan Bible Institute. Wil served his country in the United States Navy.

Shortly thereafter in the early fifties, he married his first wife, and they had two children, Leslie and Kevin. In the late sixties, he met his second wife, Harriett Davis Hines and was married on December 24, 1977. During his work career Wil was a clothier and letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for thirty years.

He was revered on his route by all, especially senior citizens. He was that mailman that personalized deliveries by taking time to chat and offer help any way he could. Wil loved the Lord and first became a deacon at Zion Baptist Church in New York where he met and made lifelong friends.

He also diligently served at First Glorious Church and Garden of Prayer Cathedral in Bronx, New York. He joined Miracle Chapel when he came to Roanoke, Virginia and later Garden of Prayer #7. Wil served as a deacon, a faithful member in Sunday school, the Men’s Chorus, YPWW and supported the Missionary Board.

He remained a member until his wife’s passing in 2009. Pop loved the word of God, and loved sharing it with others. His advice was to know the word for yourself.

Study to show thyself approved (2 Timothy 2:15). Today he would encourage you to accept Jesus and develop a relationship with him in preparation to meet again in heaven. Wil is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Harriett; two sisters, Marguerite Whitfield, Mildred Taylor and his brother, Jim Taylor.

He leaves behind his daughters, Leslie Evans, Freida Hines and Donna Hawkins; his sons, Kevin Taylor and Melvin Hines (Laurie); seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2018, at Garden of Prayer #7 Vision of Faith Ministries. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may call on Thursday afternoon for viewing at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to www.
