Willard “Butch” McCartney, age 86, of Hubbard, Iowa passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Hubbard Care Center. Willard Roy “Butch” McCartney, son of Willard M. and Leone (Mitchell) McCartney was born June 28, 1932 in Boone, Iowa. Willard graduated from Boone High School in 1950.

He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1950-1953. He served during the Korean War as a flight engineer and with the Air Sea Rescue Service in San Diego, California as well as in the Phillipines… Read More » and was honorably discharged in November 1953. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Eller on June 16, 1955.

He operated the Mobil Service Station in Boxholm, Iowa from 1954-1956. In 1956, Butch moved their family to Colorado Springs, Colorado where he served on the Colorado Springs Police Department until 1967. He put his faith in Jesus Christ in 1962, at the age of 30 years and in 1967 moved his family to Hubbard, where he resided until his death.

He moved back to Iowa and worked for Merrill Wiechmann for two years then began farming in 1969 until he retired in 1996. After he retired, he worked at the Iowa State Fair campgrounds during the Iowa State Fair for 15 years. He served on the Hardin County REC Board for 12 years and the Buckeye Coop Board.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #4 in Hubbard, Iowa and the Faith Evangelical Church in Radcliffe, Iowa. Butch and his wife, Marilyn, spent many years of retirement wintering in Donna and Alamo, Texas. After a long battle with Alzheimers Butch passed peacefully on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at the Hubbard Care Center where he had resided for the last three and a half years.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife Marilyn of Hubbard, Iowa; four children Kris Gustafson (Tim) Cindy Ellett (Tim) all of Ames, Iowa, Mike McCartney (Cindy) of Hubbard, Iowa and Marc McCartney (Steph) of DeSoto, Iowa; 13 grandchildren Kellie Thayer, Kendra Gustafson, Katie Reideman, Mary Ellett, Lindy Ellett, Matt McCartney, Kristy Vogt, Brad McCartney, Brent McCartney, Faith McCartney, Elijah McCartney, Sam McCartney and Grace McCartney; 10 great-grandchildren and sister Sally Renfro of Peopria, Arizona; along with many relatives and friends. Butch was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson Seth McCartney. Memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial to be established.
