William Redington Lynch, a lifelong resident of Greenwich, CT, and more recently of Vero Beach, FL and Rowayton, CT, passed away on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, CT, just shy of his 90th birthday. Born on November 17, 1928 in New York City, he was the youngest child of the late Francis Russell Vincent Lynch and Helen Adams Barrett Lynch. He is survived by his sister Helen (“Rogie”) Lynch Dickey of Scarborough, ME, and predeceased by his brothers R. Vincent Lynch of Dallas, TX and David Barrett Lynch of Gladwyne, PA.

Bill is survived by his wife Mary “Muffie” Grant Lynch and his children, Melissa Lynch Woolford, husband Andrew, of Norwalk, CT; Elizabeth Barrett Lynch, husband John Hartley, of Venice, CA; Cynthia Lynch Adams, husband Daniel, of Darien, CT; Kimberly Lynch Barr, husband Judson, of San Anselmo, CA; and Sarah Phillips Lynch, partner Justin Wolff, of Portland, ME; and grandchildren Eliza, William Alexander, Colin, and Alden Woolford; Isabel Hartley; Caitlin Adams; Hannah, Austin, and Samuel Barr; Ruby, Oscar and Sadie Wolff. Bill graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy (1947), Yale University (1951) and Columbia Law School (1958). A gifted athlete, Bill played baseball and squash at Exeter and Yale.

In 1952, following his first year at Columbia Law School, Bill joined the Navy, and completed his service as a pilot on the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga in 1956. Bill began his legal career in 1958 at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley and McCloy in New York City. He joined Cummings & Lockwood in 1962, where he became a Partner in 1966, and served as Partner-in-Charge of the firm’s Greenwich office.

During his more than 50 years practicing law, he advised on corporate, real estate, estate planning matters and trust and estate administrations. During his career, Bill devoted time to his community through professional, civic and charitable causes. Among other contributions, he served on the Representative Town Meeting of Greenwich, the Greenwich Board of Education, and as Campaign Chairman for the Greenwich United Way.

Bill loved his many years playing a variety of sports which enriched his friendships. He played golf, tennis, paddle and squash with friends from all eras of his life. In his later years, he enjoyed the U.S. Seniors Golf Association.

He was an active member of the Round Hill Club, where he served as Secretary, and The Field Club of Greenwich, where he was a former President. He leaves behind a loving family, both immediate and extended, for whom Bill was a wonderful role model. He was a devoted husband to Muffie for 60 years.

He was a beloved father to five daughters, revered father-in-law, and engaged grandfather. He was admired for his calm and steady demeanor, his understated manner, wise counsel, kindness, sense of humor, and enduring gratitude. He adored the company of his family and friends.

He deeply appreciated the beauty of nature, being active outdoors, and singing and playing the piano. He always greeted us with a smile and his laughter was contagious. He will be sorely missed.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Round Hill Community Church, 395 Round Hill Road, Greenwich, CT.
