Obituary for A. Kate Alderete A. Kate Alderete nee’ Anne Catherine Houck, 56, passed on to her eternal home at the Masonic Home Care Center on Sunday, October 14, 2018. She was the daughter of Peter and Mary Lou Houck and was born into a military family at Ireland Army Hospital, Fort Knox, on May 10, 1962. After her father retired from a military career, her family settled in Louisville where Kate attended St. Edward School and Mercy Academy.
Following high school graduation in 1980, Kate moved to California, earned a B.S. in Biology and Technical Writing and a Masters degree in Communications while working and enjoying long hikes and bike riding and skiing and scuba diving with friends. She was an avid gardener and a great lover of animals. Her back yard and home housed a variety of furry and feathered friends, and she rarely turned away a stray.
Kate was married in 1995 and 4 years later was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. When the marriage ended, Kate was encouraged to return to Kentucky. She settled in Bardstown and remained there, with the help of her devoted companion and caregiver Jimmie Miracle, until her illness progressed and she required full time care.
The family wishes to extended gratitude to Hosparus of Louisville and the Masonic Home Care Center for their kindness and care of Kate and her family in the advanced stage of her illness. Kate is preceded in death by her sister, Marguerite “Margie” Houck. She is survived by her parents, Peter and Mary Lou Houck; siblings, Peter T. Houck, Mary E. Murphy and John Houck (Christy); her beloved companion and caregiver Jimmie Miracle and cherished nieces, nephews and friends.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Noon Thursday, October 18, 2018 at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, 2119 Payne Street. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until time of Mass. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 10 a.m. Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, “in St. Matthews” was entrusted with arrangements.
