Obituary for Adil M. Yaqub On May 14, 2018, UCSB professor emeritus Adil M. Yaqub passed away. He was 90 years old. Born and raised in Palestine in a village near the West Bank city of Nablus, Adil attended high school in Jerusalem and then came to America to study mathematics at UC Berkeley.

There he met his wife-to-be, Nancy Shiddell; and he and Nancy were married for 60 years until she passed away in 2011. Adil’s career as a mathematics professor began at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where he served for 5 years. In 1960 he joined the faculty at UCSB, teaching there for 56 years until he retired in 2016 at the age of 88.

He was extraordinarily devoted to his work. In his immediate family, Adil is survived by his son Charles (Marilyn); his daughter Hanan; and his grandson Ziyad. His large extended family includes siblings, nieces, nephews, and their many children and grandchildren.

He was the first in his family to come to America, blazing the trail for many others to follow. A service in Adil’s memory will be held on Monday, May 21 at 12 noon at Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapel, 15 E. Sola Street, Santa Barbara, 93101. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UCSB “Adil Yaqub Is My Hero” Math Student Scholarship Fund.
