Obituary for Alfred Herbert Klages Alfred Herbert Klages, Retired NYPD, ESU, 89 years of age Devoted husband to Joan for 57 years, devoted father to Christine and Kurt, grandfather (POP) to Alana, Colin, Kristian and Matthew, father-in-law to Tom Fitzgerald and Julieta Klages, Uncle to Kim and Karen, and brother-in-law to Carol Kiernan. Al was a Korean War veteran assigned to the 82nd Airborne unit. He worked as a brew master at the Rheingold Brewery in Queens.

He joined the NYPD where he served in the Emergency Service Unit, Truck 9 in the 75th Precinct faithfully serving the city for 26 years. Al was larger than life, known by many as “Big Al” who was respected for the way he conducted himself on and off the job. He could be tough when needed and compassionate at the same time, a real man’s man!

To know him was to love him. He always had a smile for you, or a story to tell along with a PBA card! He was a hunter and avid fisherman, who was most happy out on the bay on his boat.
