Obituary for Alton Lee Downs Alton Lee Downs was born May 1, 1932 in White River, South Dakota to Harlan and Jean Atkinson Downs. The family moved to Nebraska and then, at the age of 9, the family moved to Redding, California where Alton graduated from Shasta Union High School. After High School he enlisted in the Navy where he served on the USS Boxer and the USS Oriskany during the Korea Conflict from October of 1951 until October of 1955.

After being discharged from the Navy, Alton attended classes at Shasta Junior College in Redding. Alton was married to Patricia Dorsey on May 25, 1958, and their union was blessed with two sons: Braden and Barry. They raised their family in Redding, where Alton worked as a truck driver delivering freight locally.

Alton will be forever remembered as a kind and gentle soul who loved people. He was active in his church, enjoyed working in his garden, fishing, camping and hiking, and especially loved the coastal Redwoods of northern California and the mountains of Idaho. Alton was proud of his family and his two sons— the eldest a chef, and the youngest a 21-year Army veteran.

Patricia and Alton moved to Milo 11 years ago to be closer to Barry and his family. Although they missed the mountains of Idaho, they wouldn’t trade the time with family for anything. Alton also found great enjoyment in caring for his dogs and grand-dogs.

Alton passed away December 13, 2018 at the VA Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons, Braden Downs of Redding and Barry (Karen) Downs of Milo; granddaughters, Korie (Dr. Kevin) Ehlers, and Ariel Downs; great grandsons, Jameson and Peter; and sisters, Von Kerns and Donetta Gordon; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harlan and Jean; siblings, Gary Downs and Harla Hanford; and dear friend, Barry Rannells.
