Obituary for Ann Smith Mrs. Ann J. Smith age 88 of Mayfield passed away at 6:55 AM Wednesday October 3, 2018 in Mayfield. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mayfield. Ann graduated from Murray State with honors in 1959.
She returned to earn a Masters of Arts degree in secondary education in 1962. Her graduate degree which included 30 hours above her Masters. She taught in 3 high schools Farmington, Lowes & Wingo over a 13 year period.
She retired the Director of Pupil Personnel at Mayfield City Schools. Her career, in the classroom and in the office, has touched both students and fellow professionals. She refers to former students as simply “my friends”.
When talking of them she said “I always enjoy seeing them. Hopefully I have helped them in some way”. She was a past president & treasurer of the Kentucky Directors of Pupil Personnel, provided leadership for regional conferences, and is a charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa (Alpha Beta Chapter), an international honorary sorority for women educators.
While in college she was a member of Pi Omega Pi honorary business education fraternity and Kappa Delta Phi honorary education fraternity. She served as director of Mayfield City Schools F.A.C.E. Re Center, and was on the Mayfield-Graves United Way board, was a member of the Kentucky Directors of Pupil Personnel Association serving as President in 1992, a member of the educational administration professional advisory board of the department of educational leadership and counseling at MSU, was a lifetime member of the MSU Alumni Association and past president of the Association.
She served the Mayfield-Graves County Literacy Council as Director and President. She was particularly proud of her role in Mayfield High’s tutoring program. She is survived by 1 daughter- Patricia Ann (Hal) Anderson of Mayfield, 3 grandchildren- Tad Anderson of Mayfield, McKensey Smith Sims and Spencer Alan Smith both of Tampa, FL.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bobby Smith, parents- Claude & Claudine Bales Jones, 1 son- Scott Alan Smith, 1 sister- Sue Gingles and 2 brothers- James & Robert Jones. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday October 5, 2018 at the Highland Park Cemetery with Bro. Josh Ketchum officiating.
