Anne Mary Childs, born July 5, 1921 as Anne Mary Kotowicz, passed away June 28, 2018. Born in Syracuse, New York, to John and Mary Kotowicz with brothers John and Joseph. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Eve Kotowicz, her nieces Lin, Nancy and Carol, her son-in-law, Greg Schleicher, her daughter, Marianne Schleicher, her grandson, Brendan Duffy, and her soon to be granddaughter-in-law, Danae Azevedo.

Anne was the matriarch of the family for many, many years and fiercely loved and protected each family member. Anne was hard of hearing from an early age due to a fall that caused irreparable nerve deafness, and she made the most of her handicap. She attended the Rochester School for the Deaf, which gave her the tools needed to have a full life with her hearing loss.

As a young woman, she took a bus to California with $5 and a jar of peanut butter. When she arrived in California, she went on a blind date with a young, handsome sailor, Thomas Childs. They fell in love and were married and resided in San Francisco.

They moved to South San Francisco in 1959, where the family home remains today. Marianne is their only child. In 1970, Tom passed away from emphysema.

Anne raised Marianne by herself and sacrificed everything to provide a stable home and the best education possible. She spent 50 years as a jeweler for Granat Brothers Jewelers and knew everything there is to know about diamonds. She had an unparalleled passion for life and was a mentor, role model and friend to all who knew her.

Even during the worst of times, she maintained an upbeat attitude and always sought to be positive. She will be remembered for many things but most of all her funny sayings like “Hi ya baby” and “Not bad legs for an old broad! ” Anne’s 97th birthday is July 5, and since no one loved a good party more than her, we will celebrate her that day.

The funeral mass is at St. Veronica’s Church at 434 Alida Way in South San Francisco at 10:00 a.m., followed by the interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. After the interment, there will be a luncheon and life celebration in her honor at The Basque Cultural Center located at 599 Railroad Avenue in South San Francisco. Anne was a huge SF Giants and Golden State Warriors fan.

The family asks that guests feel free to wear the teams’ colors or gear. Donations can be made in her name to the Institute on Aging in San Mateo.
