Obituary for Arthur Harold “Art” Gustafson Arthur Harold “Art” Gustafson, age 72, of Spring Lake passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at The Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence. He was born July 17, 1945, in Grand Haven to Harold and Marjorie (Reichelt) Gustafson, and he married the former Debbie Erickson of Bessemer, Michigan, on October 15, 1983. Art attended Fruitport Community Schools and graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1963.
He continued his studies at Ferris State University and completed his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Pharmacy. He was a member of Phi Delta Chi pharmacy fraternity. Art’s work history as a registered pharmacist spanned almost five decades, starting at Fritz the Druggist in Muskegon Heights, then owning and operating The Prescription Shop on Peck Street, where he was proud to be one of the first pharmacies in Muskegon to be computerized.
He completed his career working for D & W and worked twenty years with Walmart. His other interests and hobbies included being involved with the Sea Scouts and building a dune buggy in his younger years, attempting to play golf and racquetball. He shot in the local pistol league at North Ottawa Rod & Gun Club where he was a life member for many years.
Art’s passion was hunting, which led to building a log cabin and planting food plots and trees for the deer and turkeys. He cherished his years involved with his sons in the Boy Scouts Troop #14, where he completed Wood Badge and still participated as a merit badge counselor and assistant district commissioner for the President Ford Lakeshore Council. Art was proud to be a fifty-year member of the Michigan Pharmacists Association and a member of the North American Hunting Club.
He was currently a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Spring Lake, where he served on the Fellowship Committee. Art formerly was a member at St. Luke Lutheran Church where he served as an elder and chairman of the congregation. Art is lovingly remembered by his wife, Debbie Gustafson of Spring Lake; two sons, Eric Gustafson of Fort Polk, LA and Mark Gustafson of Fenton, MI; two sisters, Phyllis Frietchen of Spring Lake and Elsie Campbell of Paint Rock, TX; two sisters-in-law, Judy (Dennis) Mattson of Ishpeming, MI and Charlene (John) Harris of Marinette, WI; two brothers-in-law, Gerry (Ande) Erickson of Green Bay, WI and Jerry (Gemma) Wanink of Ironwood, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers-in-law, Fred Frietchen and Jim Campbell; and sister-in-law, Arlene Wanink. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2018, at Spring Lake Cemetery with Rev. Michael Goers officiating.
Per the wishes of the family there will be no visitation, and at Art’s request there will be a gathering of family and friends at the Gustafson home in July, where he wished all to enjoy the last elk he shot. The family would like to thank for their exceptional service the caring staff at The Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence. “They made a difficult time easier to get through”.
