Austin Eugene “Gene” Sharpes passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 77 on October 27, 2018 in his home. He was born on August 27, 1941 in Shelton, WA to Marion and Helen Sharpes. He later moved to Portland, Oregon and was drafted into the Army, serving 2 years in Vietnam.

(1968 and 1969) He married Deloris “Dee” Sharpes on November 1, 1969 and they were married almost 49 years. They resided in Milwaukie, Oregon and were members of the American Legion Post 180 in Milwaukie for over 50 years. In 1999 they moved to Oregon City.

Gene is survived by his wife, his brother David Sharpes, his children Karen Sharpes Wu (Zhen Wu) and Tye Sharpes (Hollie Sharpes), 14 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter Gayl Sharpes Nelson. Gene worked for Freightliner Corporation 33 years and belonged to the Machinists Union Local 105, retiring in 2001.

He was a bowler and an avid outdoorsman. He loved to Hunt in the Sweet Home area on Canyon Creek, and spent countless weekends fishing and camping on the Clackamas River. Gene had an exceptional and playful sense of humor and found laughter in every situation.

He was deeply loved and will be truly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, founders of the wall.
