Avanelle E. “Toots” (Paul) Hicks, residing in South Bend, IN; peacefully passed on Sunday, October 21, 2018. She was reunited in heaven with her husband on nearly 73 years, Wayne Hicks, who passed away on March 10, 2018. Toots was born May 28, 1928 in Milford, IN, the daughter of Errett & Gladys (Kurtz) Paul, before becoming a lifelong resident of South Bend.

She and Wayne married on December 2, 1945 in Cassopolis, MI. Toots faithfully cared for her family as a homemaker and mother, raising four children: Nancy (Daniel) Bone of South Bend; Errett (Judy Smith) Hicks of South Bend; and Paul (Nora) Hicks of Mishawaka; and Melayha (Matt) Fluke of Eureka, CA. Toots and Wayne became members of Calvary Temple Church (now Southgate Church) where they served and volunteered in many ministries.

Toots is remembered for her cheerful disposition and helpfulness in teaching Sunday School, young adult ministries, bereavement meals, and event preparation. She was also a member of the Calvary Temple women’s bowling league for decades. Toots and Wayne opened Globe Auto Sales in 1976, which they owned until their retirement in 1991.

Since then, she enjoyed vacationing with friends and spending time with her extended family. She is survived by her four children, six grandchildren: Dawn (Rhett) Keiser, Wendy (Jason) Wright, Jason Hicks, Julie (Brad) Allison, Amy (Michael) Bunn, and Jennifer (Mike) Pflugner, all of South Bend, IN; as well as 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Noble & Delbert Paul, a sister, Betty Delcamp, a daughter-in-law, Sue (Beron) Hicks, and a great-great grandson, Stanley Gilbert.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 25, at Southgate Church, 3717 S. Michigan St., South Bend, with Rev. Jeff Kennedy officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Church.

Arrangements for the Hicks family are being made by the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel.
