Barbara Louise (Walker) Kalma, 83, of Newton died on Thursday, May 2, at MercyOne Medical Center in Newton. No services are scheduled at this time. Burial will be held at Newton Union Cemetery.

The Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory is handling the cremation and arrangements. Barbara, the daughter of Harold and Lillian (Parker) Walker, was born on July 19, 1935 in Grinnell. She grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn High School.

After high school, Barbara moved to California for a few years before moving back to Iowa and making her home in Newton. When she returned to Newton she worked at a restaurant where she met John Kalma. They were united in marriage in Newton in 1963 and blessed with one son, Timothy.

Barbara enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards, and spending time with family. Barbara is survived by her sisters, Anabel Ballard and Jane Maple, both of Newton and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Kalma; son, Timothy Kalma; sister, Marjorie Cottrell; and two brothers, Robert and Melvin Walker.
