Obituary for Bernadine “Bernie” Alfreda Stachowiak Bernadine (Bernie) Alfreda Stachowiak was born January 14, 1929 in Nanticoke, PA, to Vincent Anthony Zanowicz, a coal miner, and Frances Grzymski Zanowicz. She was the oldest of three girls. Bernie was qualified and certified as a registered nurse in 1950 and worked in nursing for many years before retiring in November of 1986.

Her husband John Ladislaus Stachowiak (deceased) also grew up in Nanticoke, the son of a coal miner. They were married on June 21,1952 and moved to Warren, PA, where they raised four children, John, Susan, Rick and Katie. Bernie and John retired to Lakeland, Florida, to be near her sister Lee and brother-in-law Henry Krason.

After John’s passing her sister Ann Warkomski (deceased) lived with her for several years. Bernie loved the beach and the warm climate of Florida. She moved to Kennewick, WA, four years ago and became the life and joy of the Parkview Estates Retirement Community.

Her favorite pastimes were reading mysteries, shopping, and trying to rule the bingo games. She liked watching TV, especially football. Her favorite teams were Notre Dame and the Pittsburgh Steelers; her least favorite teams were whoever was playing Notre Dame and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bernie passed away quietly on Sunday, April 8, 2018, with family by her side. She is survived by her sister, Lee Krason (Hank) and her four children, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren: John & Janet Stachowiak, their children Kristofer Stachowiak (Ann Jones), Loren Gifford (Tom), and Rachael Stachowiak, and Kris and Ann’s children, twins Emily and Alex, and Audrey Stachowiak; Susan Gubala Anderson; Richard Stachowiak (Lesley Wildfong) and sons William (Dana Rudy) and Anthony Stachowiak (Grace Stranch); and Catherine Ann Anderson (Will). A gathering of friends will be held at the Parkview Estate retirement home on April 21, 2018 at 2 p.m. to celebrate Berinie’s life.

Bernie’s final resting place will be beside her husband in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Wilkes Barre, PA. A memorial service for family will be held in June at the graveside. Mueller’s Tri-Cities Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
