Mr. Bernard O. “Bernie” Cordell, age 81, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Frederick Memorial Hospital from Leukemia. He was the beloved husband of Elaine Cordell his wife of 61 years. Born March 22, 1937 in Frederick, Maryland he was a son of the late Welty and Margaret Lytton Cordell.

Due to his mothers’ health he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Maggie and Fulton Davis, from the age of two, until he was an adult. He was raised on a farm of which he loved every minute. Planting wormweed, tobacco and corn, and butchering as many as six hogs on Thanksgiving Day.

Bernie was a 1955 graduate of FHS and loved attending all of his class reunions. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960-1962 stationed in Panama. After his Army service he worked for Bechtel Corporation, traveling all over the USA, and two years in Saudia Arabia.

Then later owned and operated Mt. Airy Rental. He was one of the original founders of the Damascus Jaycees.

A member of Montgomery United Methodist church since 1957. He loved making new friends and Thursday’s at the Golden Corral, and always looked forward to the January Oyster Roast in Baltimore, which he had attended for 50 years. Surviving besides his wife Elaine are cousins, Jack Cordell, Virginia Rhodes and Barbara ton.

Also a special almost son Steve Hash, lifelong friend and Friday night dinner partners Diane and Kenneth Reader. Bernie was preceded in death this August by his precious Kitty Cat “Baby Girl” that he loved and missed so very much. A Celebration of His Life will be held Saturday, December 29, at Montgomery United Methodist Church, 28325 Kemptown Road, Damascus, Md.
