She was born April 5, 1951, in Richmond, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Josephine and Paul Farkas; and father-in-law, Samuel Major.

Bernice is survived by the love of her life, Charles Daniel Major. Married in 1975, this September they would have celebrated 44 years of marriage. She leaves behind three loving children, Emily Major of Mechanicsville, Robb (Kortney) Major of Charleston, W.Va.

and Paul Major of Richmond; four grandchildren, Madeline and Gavin Doggett and Ruby and Tad Major; brothers, Paul (Sue) Farkas and James (Coline) Farkas, both of Sandston; loving extended family and a host of very special friends. Caring for others was her passion. From babysitting neighborhood children to taking care of elderly family members and friends, Bernice was always putting others before herself and her needs.

For more than 26 years, Bernice worked faithfully in the dental practice of her brother-in-law, where she cared for patients who quickly became her friends. She spent many sleepless nights working with her children on homework assignments and school projects. She never missed a sporting event, skating competition, choir concert, art show or theater performance.

Taking care of her family was her life’s work, and she gave of herself willingly and with unconditional love. Bernice was a faithful member of Northside Baptist Church for many years. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Jonathan Foote and the Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital team for the care and compassion they provided.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home. Services will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, February 8, 2019, at Northside Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park.
