BERYL QUINN (nee NOWELL), 95, ALSO KNOWN AS “ETTIE”, DIED AUGUST 28, 2018 AT OVERLOOK MEDICAL CENTER, SUMMIT NJ. SHE WAS BORN DECEMBER 8, 1922 IN BARBADOS, BRITISH WEST INDIES. SHE CAME TO THE UNITED STATES IN 1944.

SHE BECAME A LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE, MET AND MARRIED BERNARD QUINN, AND BEGAN RAISING HER CHILDREN IN BROOKLYN, NY, WHERE SHE RESIDED UNTIL 2009 WHEN SHE RELOCATED TO MAPLEWOOD, NJ. BERYL WAS A DEVOTED WIFE AND MOTHER WITH STRONG FAMILY VALUES. SHE WAS JOINED… Read More » IN NEW YORK CITY BY HER SISTERS, DORIS AND RUBY, AND THEY COLLECTIVELY RAISED THEIR CHILDREN AS IF THEY HAD THREE MOTHERS.

THE CHILDREN ARE MORE LIKE SIBLINGS THAN COUSINS. WHILE HER SONS WERE IN COLLEGE SHE EARNED HER DEGREE AND CERTIFICATION AS A REGISTERED NURSE. SHE WORKED AT UNITY HOSPITAL, KINGSBROOK JEWISH MEDICAL CENTER AND WYCKOFF HEIGHTS MEDICAL CENTER, ALL IN BROOKLYN.

SHE IS SURVIVED BY HER SONS OLIVER (“VERE”) AND MARK, DAUGHTER IN LAW SIMONE, GRANDCHILDREN JERMAL, BRIAN, SALIM, ELLIOT, STORM, SKYLAR AND XANDER, GREAT GRANDSON XAVIER, SISTER RUBY NOWELL HARRIS, AS WELL AS MANY NIECES, NEPHEWS, IN LAWS, GODCHILDREN AND FRIENDS IN THE US, CARIBBEAN AND ENGLAND. HER HUSBAND, BERNARD, DAUGHTER IN LAW, BETTIE, AND SISTERS KATHLEEN LAURIERS, DORIS KIRVEN, MATILDA BARKER AND HILDA MITCHELL PREDECEASED BERYL. BERYL WAS A LOYAL, SELFLESS AND STRAIGHTFORWARD PERSON.

SHE BELIEVED THAT EDUCATION WAS A KEY TO SUCCESS, AND THROUGHOUT HER LIFE SHE ENCOURAGED PEOPLE OF ALL AGES TO GET AS MUCH EDUCATION AS POSSIBLE. THOSE WHO SHE ENCOURAGED, NURTURED AND INFLUENCED ARE HER LEGACY. CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS IN LIEU OF FLOWERS (Note on your check that the contribution is being made in memory of Beryl Quinn) WINCHESTER GARDENS SCHOLARSHIP FUND (this scholarship fund supports employees of Winchester Gardens, where Beryl lived since 2009, who attend college.
