Bettie Benner Wright of Southern Pines, formerly of Raeford, died Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at FirstHealth Hospice in Pinehurst at the age of 87. Mrs. Wright was born on April 25, 1931 to the late Claude J. Benner, Sr. and Bevie Corbett. Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel M. Wright and her sister, Janice B. Tew.

Mrs. Wright was born in Moore County, the family later moved to Raeford in 1941. She attended Hoke County Schools, worked several years for Burlington Industries, and McPhaul-Williams Office Business Company. She attended First Baptist Church after moving to Raeford and was active in the church.

She was a part-time organist and pianist at the church during her high school years. After her marriage she attended the Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church and served in several capacities including Sunday School Teacher, Youth Worker, pianist and choir director for many years. Mrs. Wright attended Pembroke State College from 1967 to 1970, graduating Magnum Cum Laude with a BS in Elementary Education.

She taught school in Cumberland County Schools for 20 years. Mrs. Wright is survived by 1 daughter, Katharine W. Warner, and husband, James of Raeford, 2 sons, John M Wright and wife, Deborah of Aberdeen, Rev. Thomas T. Wright and wife, Tammy of Lincolnton, 1 sister, Ina Freeman and husband Don of Pensacola, Florida, 1 brother, CJ Benner and wife, Linda of Raleigh, sister in law Rachel Dees of Raeford, 5 grandchildren Jamie Warner, Matthew Wright and wife Sara, Nathan Wright and wife Janey, Chelsi W. Call and husband Jon, Jordan Wright and wife, Madison and 4 great grandchildren, Jeremiah Wright, Anira Wright, Molly Wright, and Jonah Wright.

A visitation will be held 1:00pm-2:00pm Friday, May 11, 2018 at Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church, 379 West Palmer Street, Raeford, NC. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm at Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church with Reverend Roger Burns officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 1863, Raeford, NC 28326, FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care 251Campground Road, West End, NC 27376 or Boys & Girls Home of NC, PO Box 127 Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450.
