Betty Arlene Toy, 93, of Pleasant Hill and formerly of Oskaloosa, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2019, at Parkridge Specialty Care in Pleasant Hill. Betty Toy, the devoted daughter of William Lester Toy and Phoebe Blanche (Johnson) Toy, was born March 1, 1926, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She attended Oskaloosa schools and later worked at Ideal Manufacturing.

She retired in 1983 and in 2004 she moved to Des Moines to be closer to her family. Betty was a Chicago Cubs super-fan, and adored watching college basketball on TV. She also would have eaten fried chicken for every meal “if they’d let” her, and was happiest when watching “Gunsmoke”, “Bonanza”, and “Matlock” reruns on TV.

In fact, it was well known to visitors to turn around and quietly walk away when entering a room if any of the above were on, unless delivering fried chicken. Betty left a legacy of generosity that belied her means, and unwittingly made some of the, sharpest, wryest comments that will go down in infamy with the members of her family that remained by her side during the past decades. Betty’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to her nurse/ally/nemesis, Carla at Parkridge Nursing Home, and to the many extraordinary employees and volunteers at Care Initiatives Hospice.

You all made the unbearable bearable. She is survived by sisters-in-law: Betty Jean Toy of Des Moines, Phyllis Toy of West Des Moines, and Judith Toy of Hiawatha; as well as four nieces, one nephew, and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers: Melvin Lester Toy and Kenneth Toy.

Graveside funeral services for Betty will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 23, 2019, at Forest Cemetery with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Family and friends may gather at Langkamp Funeral Chapel before 10:30 a.m., Saturday morning to form a procession to the cemetery. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Betty A.
