Betty M. O’Brien, age 93, lifetime Ashtabula area resident, died early Thursday morning after a brief stay at the Villa-on-the-Lake Assisted Living Center in Conneaut. She was born December 6, 1924 in Ashtabula, the daughter of Calvin S. & Elsie M. (Garrabrant) Glaus. Betty was married to Robert B. O’Brien on December 6, 1947 in Ashtabula after working together for the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co

She had worked multiple jobs but spent much of her working career with the Ashtabula City School System, most of those years as secretary at the Bunker Hill/McKinsey Elementary School prior to her retirement. Mrs. O’Brien was an election poll worker, volunteered with Homesafe and was a Gray Lady at ACMC. She was a member of Chapel Hills Golf Course, golfing daily into her 90’s, she was an avid bowler, winning many trophies and awards and a state championship in her category.

She hosted Thanksgiving dinner more than 40 years and made gravy more exceptional than anyone. Betty was an articulate, organized person. Survivors include three children, Barbara B. (Paul) Detch of Lewisburg, WV, Douglas P. (Arlene) O’Brien of Madison & Thomas B. (Jennifer) O’Brien of Ashville; five grandchildren, Christopher (Erin) Nothem, Melanie (Kim) Nothem, Daniel (Abby) O’Brien, Brett O’Brien & Kaitlyn (Drew) Shisila; four great-grandchildren, Thomas & Charlie O’Brien and Mallory & Greta Nothem and nieces and nephews, Cathy, Greg & Jeff Glaus and Jan Syverson & Nancy Marcus.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert in 1985, a great-granddaughter, Avery Nothem, brothers, Calvin, Robert & Ted Glaus and a nephew, Bill Glaus. Visitation will be Monday from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 526 W. Prospect Rd. , Ashtabula, with informal sharing to begin at 1:00 PM.

Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Homesafe, P. O. Box 702, Ashtabula, OH 44005, envelopes will be at the funeral home. The Fleming & Billman Funeral Homes and staff are honored to serve the Betty O’Brien family.
