Obituary for Beverly J. Nelson Beverly J. Nelson, nee Lydick, of Columbia IL, died Wednesday, January 2nd, 2019. Bev, born on January 1st, 1937 in Du Bois, PA, graduated from Du Bois High School class of 1954. Preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Jean Jeffrey, January 2018; and granddaughter, Crystal Lee Becherer, December 2016.

She is survived by her childhood sweetheart and spouse, Kenneth L. Nelson, where they celebrated 62 years on January 1, 2019. Her 2 sons; Douglas Nelson and wife Michele along with their children; Brittany (Brett) Toenjes, and their children, Tessa and Rylee; Katie Stahr; Samantha Nelson. Craig Nelson and his wife Julie along with their children; Gabriel, Sophia and Jacob Nelson.

A granddaughter, from her daughter Susan, Amber (Garret) Kasper, and their children, Oliver and Suzie; and a great grandson, from her granddaughter Crystal, Daltyn Smith, along with other relatives and friends. Bev spent her youth in Du Bois, PA, the youngest of the 5 Lydick children, where she met Ken in 1945 when they attended Sandy Township School. As high-school classmates, they had eyes for each other until Ken enlisted in the Navy.

They were sweet-hearts throughout his Navy service. During a weekend leave, they wed on January 1st, 1957. Following his Navy service, they moved to Cahokia, IL where they opened Nelson Tool Rental and Lawnmower Repair Shop and started a family.

They welcomed their first child, Douglas, in 1958 and their second child, Susan, in 1961. They remained there for 10 years until relocating to Columbia where their youngest son, Craig, arrived in 1972 and they raised the family. She was one of a kind wife, mom, grandmother and friend to many that would tell you their stories about her special talents, from cooking a five-course meal in a single pot, “Queeny One Pot” was the term family used, to catching a fastball, working on anything that had wheels and definitely speaking her mind.

Bev would never miss providing the personal touch with her loved ones from holiday missives to what she likes to call “leaving a calling card” when she would stop by a family members house on her “shopping days”. All of those little things from her smile, to her opinions on life will be missed by everyone who knew Bev. Visitation will be Thursday, January 10, 2019, 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, at Lawlor Funeral Home, Columbia, IL.

Memorial Services will be held, Thursday, January 10, 2019, at 7:00 pm. Private interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to: The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Ave.
