Obituary for Brig Gen (Ret) Robert Edison “Bob” Parish Print Brig Gen (Ret) Robert Edison “Bob” Parish, 81, of Big Chimney, WV, died 8 February 2019, in Charleston, WV after a long illness. Born 4 October, 1937 to Viola “Mae” Rawson Parish and Farmer Edison Parish. Married 10 August 1959, in Catlettsburg, KY to Penelope L. “Penny” Burdette.
Attended Elkview High School, and received a Board of Regents degree from West Virginia State College. Upon graduation from High School in 1955, he joined the 130th Troop Carrier Squadron, renamed 130th Air Command Group, 130th Special Operations Group, 130th Tactical Airlift Group, and finally the 130th Airlift Wing; and served there for 41 years. He served in a multitude of positions in both enlisted and officer ranks, from back shops to Command.
He was a true patriot who loved his country, the military, his unit, and the men and women who served with and for him. He believed in being educated in every endeavor; and to that end, attended numerous military courses to improve his knowledge of the organization, and his skills in his various positions. He also believed in sharing that knowledge, and mentoring the next generation for betterment of the organization and its members.
One of his favorite pieces of advice was, “Never let a day go by you don’t learn something”. From the time he was a little boy, he loved the outdoors; spending as much time as possible in the woods, learning about Nature-many times to the annoyance of his teachers and principal. He learned to hunt and fish at an early age, and continued those hobbies his entire life.
He was an avid bird hunter, not only in West Virginia, but other states as well; from Michigan to Texas, the Dakotas, Iowa, and Kansas. He was active in the local bird dog community; raising, training, and selling numerous litters of English Setters. Many bird hunters, both locally, and across the country, have owned dogs from the Parish kennel.
His dogs have been featured in the American Field magazine. He was a member of The American Kennel Club, Mountaineer Bird Hunters Association, and supporter of the National Rifle Association of America. Bob was a gifted story teller, always enjoying regaling friends and family with stories and memories recounted; frequently interjecting a great deal of humor.
He deeply loved his family, and was a devoted husband and father. Together he and Penny forged a home full of love and laughter, welcoming family and friends alike. Preceded in death by his loving wife Penny, who died 21 December 2018; and his mother, Mae Rawson Parish, who died 15 January 2001.
Survived by: daughter Brig Gen (Ret) Paige Parish Hunter, son-in-law Lt Col (Ret) Richard L. “Rick” Hunter of Clendenin; grandchildren Ryan Hunter, his wife Stephanie, and great grandchildren Catey and Colin, of Pittsburgh, PA; grandchildren Chris, and his wife Janelle, and great grandchildren Landon and Blake Hunter, of Land O’ Lakes, FL. Memorial service will be 3:00 pm Monday, 18 Feburary 2019 at Hafer Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Robinson officiating. The 130th Airlift Wing, McLaughlin Air National Guard Base will be rendering military honors.
