OBITUARY Carlo J. Lattinelli July 5, 1938 – October 1, 2018 Carlo J. Lattinelli, 80 Bookstore founder and co-owner; entrepreneur Carlo J. Lattinelli (affectionately known as Frenchie), 80, of Todt Hill, S.I., passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, at Cornell Hospital, NYC. Carlo was born on July 5, 1938, to Domenica and Agostino Lattinelli.

Growing up in South Brooklyn, N.Y., Carlo learned the importance of street smarts and hard work. After graduating from Boys High, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. Upon returning home, he continued his studies at St. John’s University.

Working days as a salesman for Kraft Foods, he continued his education at night at NYU. In 1964, Carlo married the love of his life, Maryann Cafaro. Together they worked, traveled, and created a beautiful life.

Carlo later became co-founder and a partner of Barnes & Noble Bookstore in New York City. After revamping the 5th Avenue flagship store, they created and developed college bookstores nationwide where Carlo served as president of that division. Many years later, he continued his love of books and education by opening Encore College bookstores.

As an entrepreneur, he partnered with several successful New York City restaurants, notably, Sal Anthony’s in Gramercy Park and SPQR in Little Italy. He later became an avid harness horse breeder and owner and a discerning wine collector. Carlo was known for helping anyone who needed it and never forgot where he came from.

Carlo had a lust for life and was famous for saying “Life isn’t a dress rehearsal, you only get one go around”. He told his doctors he had “no regrets and he had lived eight lives and fulfilled all his hopes and dreams for himself and his family”. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Maryann, and his three children, Carla Lattinelli, Cristina and Joseph Laforte, and Dr. Joseph and Lauren Lattinelli.

He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Michael, Matthew and Alyssa Berteletti, Joseph, Carlo and Mia Laforte, and Emma and Luca Lattinelli. A true family man, Carlo loved nothing more than watching his grandchildren grow and thrive. He was their biggest supporter and biggest fan.

Carlo is also a survived by many cousins, especially Carol Equo, as well as his two nephews, John Carli and Anthony Cafaro and their families. Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Harmon Funeral Home, S.I. The Funeral Mass is Friday, Oct.

5, at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, S.I. Burial is at Moravian Cemetery. Carlo was a staunch supporter of Calvary Hospital. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Calvary Hospital, 1740 Eastchester Rd.
