Bennettsville, SC Mr. Claude Chavis, 89, peacefully departed this life December 29, 2018 at his home. Born July 3, 1929 in Marlboro County, he was a son of the late Boyd and Evelyn Cole Chavis, Sr He was also the widower of Mrs. Betty L. Chavis.

Mr. Claude loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Victory World Outreach Center. He was always willing to do anything to help his church and served as the Sunday School Superintendent and a Board Member for many years. He was affectionately known as “Papa” by not only his family but everyone in the church and community.

He was always proud to tell everyone that he was the oldest man in the church and the “best looking” man in the church. He was a loving father, grandfather and friend. He always had a smile on his face and a kind, encouraging word for everyone.

He was a retired supervisor of Firestone Textiles and believed in working hard. Even after he retired from Firestone, he continued to work at various jobs for many years. Mr. Claude leaves behind to cherish his memory: sons, Paul Smith (Teresa) Gaffney, SC, Claude Chavis, Jr. (Viola) Bennettsville, SC, Ronnie Chavis, Seneca, SC, J. R. Chavis (Donna), Bennettsville, SC; daughters, Betty Hayes, Myrtle Beach, SC, Carolyn Stubbs, Bennettsville, SC, Lora Littles (Louis), Bennettsville, SC, Carrie Wilkes, Bennettsville, SC; & sister, Martha Wallace, of McColl, SC.

Along with their own children, he and his wife also raised 2 of their granddaughters, Terry Patterson and Krista Green, as well as their great grandson, Anfernee Covington. He had a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and was even blessed to see some of his great grandchildren’s children. Mr. Claude was also preceded in death by a brother, Boyd Chavis, Jr., and a sister, Frances Grant.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, December 31, 2018 at Victory World Outreach Center followed by burial in Chavis Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Burroughs Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to: Victory World Outreach Center, P.O. Box 358 Bennettsville, SC 29512.
