MAYBERRY, Cornelius “NeNe’ – Age 63, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2019. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., New Bethel A.M.E. Church, Decatur Street, Jackson, MS with burial in Garden Memorial Park, 8001 Highway 49 North, Jackson, MS 39209. Cornelius “NeNe” Maberry was born October 7, 1955 in Jackson, Mississippi.
He was the youngest child of Eunice and Calvin Maberry Sr. Cornelius lived in Jackson, on California Avenue until his family moved to Flint, Michigan in 1969. His parents made sure that all of their children were brought up in the church. A personal note of praise written to God, was found in his home after his passing; “I give thanks for you oh Lord.
In Jesus name, I praise thee. Amen”. It was further evidenced by the love shown in his eyes and the infectious smile on his face each time he entered a room.
Cornelius was very serious-minded, but also had a great sense of humor that kept everyone around him smiling. He was humble and friendly. He loved to cook and introduced the first “fried turkey” to our family’s Thanksgiving tradition.
Purchasing the latest cooking gadgets from late night infomercials was a favorite past time. After receiving his high school diploma from Flint Northwestern in 1973, he was employed by General Motors for 13 years. Cornelius later served his country for four years in the United States Army, (1988-1992).
After his military service, he moved back to Jackson, MS to pursue a degree from Jackson State University. Cornelius was very successful in that endeavor. He graduated from JSU in May 1996, Cum Laude, with a degree in Business Administration.
While at JSU, he was inducted into Delta Mu Delta, an international honor society that recognizes academic excellence in baccalaureate degree business administration programs. Cornelius was also a member of Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lamda, an American career and technical education organization. His family was very proud of him and his accomplishments.
After college, Cornelius moved back to Michigan. He was employed as an adult education instructor, tax preparer, and long-term substitute teacher. He remained in Michigan until his mother passed away in 1997.
Cornelius relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where he remained until his death, his family at his bedside. Cornelius “NeNe” Maberry will be dearly missed by his family and his memory will always be cherished: father, Calvin (Betty) Maberry Sr. of Flint, MI; 2 daughters, Marquita (Leroy) Collins III of Flint, MI and Princess (Travis) Brown, McDonough, GA; son, Cornelius Laton (Tonja) Douglass, of Flint, MI; grandchildren, Amber Douglass, Leroy Collins IV, Latoia Collins, Lanique Collins, Shania Douglass, all of Flint, MI and Mezeiah Brown, Khajah Brown and Xieyva Brown of McDonough, GA; great-grandchildren, Avion Montgomery, Alayla Fulgram, Brooklyn Chappell, and Na’Riyah Hartfield, all of Flint, MI; sisters, Diana (Arthur) Wright, Tammy Gill and Michelle Peterson all of Flint, MI, and Corey (Darius) Brown, of Parkland, FL; brother, Calvin (Abigail) Maberry Jr. of Jackson, MS; aunts, Pauline (Joe Nathan) Brown Sr., Helen Swan, Ernestine Maberry, and Edna Washington, all of Jackson, MS, Delores Maberry, Laura Maberry of Flint, MI, and Geneva Washington of St. Louis, MO; uncles, Johnnie (Everlean) Washington of Chicago, IL, Soloman (Claudia) Washington and Earl (Herticene) Maberry, of Jackson, MS; nephews, Maurice (Vera) Dantzler of Memphis, TN, Douglas (Bobbie) Dantzler of Flint, MI, and Jeremy (Adriana) Dantzler of Ann Arbor, MI; special cousin, Otis Washington Jr., as well as, many other cousins with who shared a special bond with him. Cornelius will be missed by a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
