Obituary for David Lamar Kelly On November 4, 2018 David Lamar Kelly age 79, loving husband and father, passed away in Provo due to complications of pneumonia. Lamar was born in the family home in Midway, to Austin David and Lona Burgener Kelly on April 4, 1939, the oldest of three boys. Lamar received his BS degree from Utah State University in Physical Education, Recreation and Health 1961.
He married Annette McKnight Kelly June 6, 1958 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had four sons Joseph, Harold, Jeffery and Jonny. Annette passed away in January 2001.
Lamar married Karolyn Kohler Wall in the Timpanogas Temple on September 5, 2001. Lamar had a passion for his family, education, coaching and the cowboy lifestyle. He had a strong belief that families are forever and embraced many family traditions.
He was an educator and coach for 33 years. He taught drivers education and physical education. He had a passion for athletics and coached cross country, track and football at Olympus High School.
In 1969, 70 and 71 he won the cross country championship. In 1970 he won the state 4A track championship. Also in 1970 he was named Utah Coach of the Year.
It gave him great satisfaction to know some of his former students progressed to professional sports. He also found joy in watching his own sons and grandsons compete in various athletic events. Lamar operated dairy farms and owned a large cattle/farming operation in Stone Idaho.
After retirement, Lamar followed the footsteps of his father and became a livestock broker. Lamar loved being in the mountains, riding horses with his family, and hunting with his sons and brothers. He was known for his quick wit and kind and compassionate spirit.
Lamar was a deeply religious man. He served in many callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In 1984 he was called to serve as the Bishop in his beloved Heber 2nd Ward.
He stated that being a bishop “made me more humble and compassionate, more aware of individual needs, more loving of my fellow man, and more reliant and trusting of my Heavenly Father”. Lamar was preceded in death by his parents Austin and Lona Kelly. He was also preceded in death by his wife Annette and his son Harold Kelly.
He is survived by his wife Karolyn, his sons Joe (Kris), Jeff (Michele) and Jonny (Stacey), 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren as well as his 2 brothers Ed (Barbara) and Brent (Mary) Kelly. A viewing will be held Wednesday, November 7th at Valley Hills Second Ward, 521 East 500 North, Heber City from 6-8pm. Funeral Services will be Thursday, November 8th at 11:00 am with viewing prior to the service 9-10:30am.
