David P. Nelson, 77, a lifelong resident of Woodville, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, in the MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham. He was the loving husband of Joanne E. (Lightbody) Nelson, to whom he was married for 56 years. David was born in Framingham, a son of Scott M. and Christine L. (Peaslee) Nelson.

He was a graduate of Hopkinton High School in 1959 and served for four years in the U. S. Airforce. He worked in the early years of the computer technology industry, serving as field engineer specialist for Model Engineering Labs, Control Data Corporation and Memorex-Telex. In his younger years, he took pleasure in square dancing and was a member of the Natick Square Riggers, where he established lifelong friendships.

He also enjoyed traveling with Joanne, family and friends. At home, he enjoyed gardening and working on clocks as a hobby. David was also an expert repairman; if something need to be fixed, you could count on him to be able to figure it out.

David was very involved in the community in his retirement, volunteering at the Hopkinton Senior Center and serving as the Chairman of the Hopkinton Council on Aging. David also volunteered and worked at the Hopkinton Public Library for several years and was a member of the Hopkinton 300th Anniversary Committee. In addition to his wife, he leaves his son Christopher Nelson and wife Mary of Orono, Maine, his daughter Kimberly Nelson and fiancé Gary D’Agostino of Franklin, and his grandchildren Elizabeth, Stephen and Antonio.

He is also survived by six siblings, Linda Dowden and husband Charles of Fultondale, Alabama, Martha Nelson and Elias Zananieri of York, Maine, Susan Wilkinson and husband David of Hudson, Scott Nelson, Jr. of Block Island, Rhode Island, Joseph Nelson and wife Marlene of Murphy, North Carolina and Richard Nelson and wife Lee Ann of Sanford, North Carolina, as well as a very special cousin Betsy Stevens of Hopkinton and many nieces and nephews. David also leaves his cat, Patches, whom he adored, and Major, their 37-year old Senegal Parrot. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, May 6, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, in the Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main Street, Westborough.

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery in Woodville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in honor of David to the Hopkinton Senior Center, 28 Mayhew Street, Hopkinton, MA 01748. www.
