SFC David Shirley Bass of Kinsey, AL, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, April 28, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at 10 a.m. in Clearman Chapel at Southern Heritage Funeral Home with Reverend Joel Snell officiating. Interment will be held immediately following the service at Crestlawn Cemetery with Southern Heritage directing.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 30, 2018, from 6-8 p.m. in Clearman Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Shirley Bass Black. David was born to elder Joel Seachum and Ada Sophia Lassiter Bass in Geneva County on May 10, 1930.

He was the tenth child and the fifth boy. He went to school in Fadette and Slocomb, AL. He did not complete high school before joining the U.S. military.

He completed his education while in the U.S. Army. David served in the Korean War with the 15th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division in 1952 and 1953. He also served in the Vietnam War with the 12th Cavalry First Air Cavalry Division in 1965 and 1966.

After a distinguished army career he retired in January 1969. During his career he was awarded the Army Occupation Medal w/ V device, Air Medal w/ Bronze Star, four Army Commendation medals, five good conduct awards, five battle stars and two combat infantryman’s badges along with many other medals and commendations. He was a life time member of VFW Post #3073 of Dothan, Mason’s Lodge #493 of Ashford, and a member of Kinsey Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; wife Oma V. (Wallace); daughter Shirley A. (Black); brothers William Edrie; Madera; Milton Eugene; Robert Lee; sisters Ida Blanche (Seay); Ruth (Ortega); Bertha Maxine (Phillips), Rosa Lee (Tindoll), and Clyde Owens. He is survived by his daughter Virginia Marie Boutwell (Steve); son in-law, William T. Black grandchildren Rachel Povlacs (Larry); Natalie McLaughlin (Brian); Danielle McNeal (Levi); David Prokopchuk; Desarae Roland; great-grandchildren Evan and Patrick Povlacs; Carter Deese; Kobi and Molli Prokopchuk; Emily VanSlyke and a special caregiver Brian Shadley.
