OBITUARY Delmar “D.C.” Scivley Jr. October 2, 1921 – September 15, 2018 Delmar C. Scivley, Jr. (“D. C.”) was born in Lawrence County (near Moulton, Alabama) in 1921. He passed away on September 15, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his parents, D. C. Scivley, Sr. and Thelma Anders Scivley, his beloved first wife of 44 years, Susie Marie Alvis, second wife of 17 years, Nita C. Gowdy, sister Bernice McRae (Neal), and sister Elsie Ernest (Glen). D. C. was a member of Riverchase United Methodist Church and The Seekers Sunday School class. As long as he was able, D. C. volunteered to work with teams on missionary and disaster responses.
He particularly enjoyed working with the Isaiah Six Eight group and their efforts in Jamaica. D. C. graduated from Ensley High School where he was a letter athlete. During his senior year, at a general school assembly, he was presented a medal by Mr. Neal Dueger, President of the Ensley Kiwanis Club.
The award was in recognition of D. C.’s outstanding work as an athlete, scholar, and leader at Ensley High School. He received a football scholarship to Howard College (now Samford University). During his sophomore year and due to the war situation, he felt a need to help.
He joined the U. S. Marine Corps in September 1942. During his tour of duty, his “bit of overseas action” was in the Marshall Islands, Kwajalein Atoll, Roi Namur Islands. He received an honorable discharge from the Corps in November, 1945, at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 911. D. C. then attended the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. At that time, with a wife and a small son, he left the university prematurely to accept a position “he couldn’t refuse”.
He became a salesman and branch manager of a business in New Orleans, Louisiana. This began a more than thirty year career in the electrical manufacturers’ representative business. In 1960, he returned to Birmingham and settled “in the country” in unincorporated Green Valley.
Green Valley became Hoover, and he and Marie raised three sons at their home on Greenvale Road. D. C. became a partner in the same agency business and retired in 1983. He established many strong friendships in the several states he traveled during his business lifetime, as well as with those individuals whose products he represented.
He missed them all after retiring. He was a charter member of the Green Valley Country Club that later became Hoover Country Club. Both D. C. and Marie were avid golfers as well as strong University of Alabama football fans.
He lost Marie in September, 1991. Nita and D. C. met at a grief meeting, each having lost their spouse about the same time. They went together four or five years and wed in 1996, she at age 70 and he at age 72.
They built a little garden home in Hoover and enjoyed their 17 years together. They were very involved in the Paradise Lake Community and made many fast friends there. They traveled extensively in the States as well as abroad until Nita’s health began to fail.
She passed away in June, 2013. After Nita’s passing, D. C. became an active member of the Krulak Marine Alliance of Alabama, where he served on the board of directors. He was honored at the Marine Corps Birthday Ball in 2017.
Survivors include sons Dale (Kathy), Dee (Suzy), and Don (Teri), grandsons Michael (Jaime) and Brian (Merilyn), granddaughters Lauren McGiboney (Brad), Jennifer Scivley, Jessica McCormick (Adam), and Hannah Braswell (Jared), and sister, Peggy Moss, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Johns-Ridout’s Mortuary-Elmwood Chapel from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm on September 18, 2018, with graveside service following. Dr. Jim Savage officiating.
