Dennis was born Jan. 21, 1950 in Kansas City, MO to Vernon and Maybelle Mooney. He graduated from Raytown High School in 1969.
Dennis served in the US Army during Vietnam. He served in the 319th Field Artillery, 101st Airborne, receiving a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Recommendation Medal, Bronze Star, 2 Over Seas Bars and a Special Skills Badge. Dennis was passionate about being involved in supporting the military; holding many positions at the American Legion Post 21: Past Commander, Past American Legion Riders Director Chapter 21 and American Legion Department of Missouri Rider of the Year 2012.
He was currently serving as Judge Advocate of Post 21 and Road Captain of Chapter 21. Dennis was a devoted volunteer at the Post, riding in many Patriot Guard Missions and supporting the needs of our Veterans and those still serving. Dennis was dedicated to the principle that our military would never receive the welcome home that he and his fellow Vietnam Veterans received.
One of his favorite memories was escorting a WWII Veteran on an Honor Flight to Washington, DC. When they came home that night, the airport was packed with people greeting them. He said it was the welcome he never received!
Dennis cooked a great hamburger! He had many hobbies in his life; fishing, hunting, his motorcycle, the dune buggy he built, woodworking and building a working civil war era cannon amongst the many things he could dream up. Dennis retired from the Cabinet Maker’s Union Local 1635 and Carpenters Union Local 315.
He belonged to the Glendale Neighborhood Park Bunch that was responsible for the revitalization of Glendale Park; creating new playgrounds, installing a walking trail, new lighting, seating, picnic tables, trees and grills. The drainage ditch was covered and added to the area available for play.
