Derrel Dell Waring, 97, of Newton died on Sunday, September 16, 2018, at Skiff Medical Center. A celebration of Derrel and his wife Frances’ life will be held at a later date at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Newton Fire Department, Monroe Fire and Rescue, or Jasper County Veteran’s Affairs may be left at the funeral home.

Derrel, the son of James Elmus and Hazel Dell (Williams) Waring, was born on June 2, 1921 in Newton. He grew up in Reasnor and graduated from Newton High School in 1939. After graduation Derrel did general carpentry work with his father.

During WWII from 1941-1945, Derrel served his country in the U.S. Army. On June 1, 1946, Derrel was united in marriage with Frances Meade at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He worked as a U.S. Postmaster in Reasnor and Monroe, retiring in 1983.

While he was working and after retirement he was also a highly regarded woodworker, specializing in trim and finish carpentry and cabinet making. Derrel was a member of the Monroe American Legion, National Active and Retired Federal Employees, United Postmasters and Managers of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Newton Masonic Lodge No. 59.

Those left to honor his memory are his daughters, Barbara Works and Debbie (Scott) Bensink; grandchildren, Sean (Bekah) King, Sarrah (Luke) Knight, Shane (Angie) King, Lacey (Bryan) Kirchmeier; and his great-grandchildren, Declan Knight, Dakota King, Peyton King, Donovan Kirchmeier, Eli Knight, and Camella King. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances; and his siblings.
