McKenzie, 92 of Tomah, passed away on Friday, February 8, 2019 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Tomah. He was born on January 11, 1927 to Angus and Marie (Johnson) McKenzie in Waukegan, IL. After attending high school, Don enlisted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during World War II.

On July 7, 1952 he was united in marriage to Janet C. Brockhaus in Milwaukee. She preceded him in death on December 29, 1996. Don worked for a variety of construction companies earlier on but found true happiness in farming, enjoying the hard work and honest sweat of tending to his crops and animals.

Don had a tender heart for the animals on the farm; affectionally naming them after his grandchildren. He was a master at working with his hands; taking cars apart and putting them back together became a favorite past time. Don’s kind and generous heart led him to volunteering as a driver for Monroe County, assisting folks with getting to appointments and sharing life stories.

Later in life, Don could be found trying his luck at the casino, not only enjoying the sounds and flashing lights of a win but also the friendships his built along the way. He was a sweet and kind man, after the loss of his dear Janet, he grew to understand the frailty of life, forgiveness, sharing words of kindness and “I Love You” came more often to those he loved. He lived a full life and now rest peacefully in the arms of Jesus.

He is survived by his children, Donald “Butch” W. of Oakdale, David (Pam) of Onalaska, Keith of Wisconsin Rapids, Robert (Cindy) of Island Lake, IL, Debra (Tim) Engleman of Ham Lake, MN and Karen (Ronald) Elsing of Camp Douglas, 16 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren.
