She served in the Navy as a Wave in Washington, D.C. during World War II where she met her husband, Raymond Hechler while he was finishing his second tour of duty, after surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor and many battles in the South Pacific serving in the Marine Corps. They married in 1947, permanently settling in Carteret, NJ.
