Dorothy “Dot” Wynelle Casary McCarty May 17, 1927 – January 12, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Dorothy “Dot” Wynelle Casary McCarty, born May 17, 1927, of Sandusky, Alabama, passed away on January 12, 2019. She was 91 years old. Dot was a passionate follower and believer of Christ and dedicated member of Sandusky First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 55 years.
Her love and devotion to Women’s Missionary Union never wavered, shown by her leading or serving faithfully on all committees pertaining to missions. She was also active on the church decorating committees, working on many teas, parties and special occasions held at the church. One of her favorites each year was the Thanksgiving display.
After rearing four children, she commenced studies at Bessemer State Technical College, and at age 52 began a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse. For 20 years she cared for patients at Lloyd Noland Hospital. Dot was also an ardent supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, and was ultimately recognized for her distinguished service to the youth of Alabama with the silver Beaver Award in 1977.
Dot was preceded in death by her dear husband of 55 years, Neil McCarty, as well as her parents and a brother and four sisters. She is survived by her sister, Lois Flannary, of Murray, Kentucky, and her four living children: Judy Mann of Vestavia Hills, Larry McCarty (Patricia), of Hueytown, Randy McCarty (Lisa) of Harrison, Georgia, and Kevin McCarty (Rebecca) of Dora. She was the beloved “Nana” to 15 grandchildren: Dr. Ryan Mann (Alicia), Eric Mann (Meredith), Judge David McCarty, Carrie McCarty Copeland (John), Shannon Russell-RN (Jimmy), Jeremy Pearson (Stacy), Elizabeth McCarty Vernon-RN (Brannon), Rachel McCarty Daniel-RN (Joey), Sgt.
Coleman McCarty (Alayna), Taylor Brooke McCarty, Jessica Rogers (Jason), Justin Clements (Alyssa), Holly McCarty Varden-RN (Alex), Hunter McCarty and Hayden McCarty. She was also the loving great-grandmother of 16 great-grandchildren. Her wonderful spirit, joy and talents will be with us always.
She was a unique and caring individual, who touched the lives of all who knew her. Many people were the recipients of her poems and cards and she so enjoyed her yard, filled with plants, flowers and birds. She was dearly loved and will be missed, until we meet again.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at the Sandusky First Baptist Church, at 1125 Haven Drive Birmingham, AL, 35214, beginning at 10:00 am, with a service at 11:00 am. Burial will follow immediately after a procession to Oakland Cemetery, 1140 Warrior Rd. , Birmingham, AL 35218.
In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in her memory to Sandusky First Church.
