OBITUARY Dorothy N. Lettre June 11, 1926 – September 26, 2018 Dorothy Lettre of Nanuet, NY passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was 92 years old. Born in Manhattan to Michael Magro and Giavanna (Jenny) Sigliano, Dorothy was the oldest of four children.
She was raised in Manhattan where she attended a technical high school and then lived in the Bronx on Leland Ave. Upon graduation, she worked as a teller for Chase Bank before meeting her beloved husband Charles Lewis Lettre, of over 50 years. The couple lived in the Bronx for many years where they raised three wonderful children Michael, Edward and Charlene until moving to West Nyack.
Dorothy enjoyed being a stay at home mom, when she wasn’t working as a Welcome Wagon Hostess, Bingo Inspector or Owner of the Italian Village Deli in Valley Cottage she was volunteering as a Republican Committee women or proudly helping her two sons run for political office. Upon retirement Dorothy and Charles moved to Boca Raton, FL where they lived for 8 years and Coconut Creek, Florida for 12 years. When Charles passed away Dorothy moved with her daughter to Chapin, SC until moving to Normandy Village, Nanuet, NY in 2012.
In December of 2016, she moved to Tappan Zee Manors Assisted Living where she lived until she left to be with Jesus. Dorothy was a true “LOVER OF FAMILY” any opportunity she had to be with her family she was there. She found so much joy spending her time with her grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Dot made her family an integral part of her life and her family was her everything. She supported her kids and grandchildren whenever asked. When not spending time with her family or friends she enjoyed traveling, eating Italian food and most especially going on cruises.
Her favorite flowers were Gardenias, Lilies and Orchids from Hawaii. She and her beloved Charles traveled the world together visiting almost every country and continent taking photos of all these flowers. When Charles passed away she continued the legacy and took her grandchildren on cruises.
Dorothy will be remembered as the world traveler, the women who loved to go to Dunkin Donuts for coffee and a bavarian cream donut, our Mother and our Nanny. Dorothy is survived by her 3 children, her son’s Michael Charles Lettre Sr. of Queens, NY, Edward John Lettre of West Nyack, NY and Naples, Florida, his wife Susan Lettre, her daughter Charlene Ann Canyes, of Chapin, SC, her husband Edward Canyes, her 10 grandchildren Jonathan Lettre of Congers, NY, his wife Dana Lettre, Daniel Lettre of Northvale, NJ, his partner Jessica Cloesmeyer, Michelle Lettre Alongi of Nyack, her husband Joseph Alongi, Michael Lettre Jr of Stony Point, Jamie Lettre of Nanuet, Lynda Lettre Lennon of Nanuet and her husband Jeremy Lennon, Matthew Canyes, Charles Canyes, Danyella Canyes and Noah Canyes all of Chapin, SC. Dorothy is also survived by her 3 great grandchildren Mikayla Lettre, Dylan Lettre and Gianna Alongi.
Her grandson Vincent Lettre of NJ predeceased her. She is also survived by her 3 brothers Richard Magro of FL, Michael Magro of NJ, and William Magro Sr of OH. Dorothy Lettre will be missed dearly by many nieces, nephews and everyone she knew especially her children and grandchildren.
A celebration of Dorothys life will take place at the Higgins Funeral Home, located at 321 S. Main Street, New City, NY, on Tuesday, October 2nd from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 9:00pm. A Funeral Service will take place at the St Anthony’s Church, (the new church) 36 West Nyack Rd , Nanuet, NY on Wednesday, October 3rd at 11:30AM. The burial will follow at St Anthony’s Cemetery.
