Obituary for Doug Holmes Clyde Douglas Holmes, 84, husband of Tommie Dudley Holmes of Greenwood, SC stepped from this life into the next – in the presence of God and his loved ones on Friday, November 9, 2018 at the Hospice House. Born August 11, 1934 in Elbert County, Georgia, Doug was a son of the late James Henry and Lizzie Mae Maxwell Holmes. He served in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve from 1952 until 1959, was retired from Moore’s Business Forms in 1986 with over 20 years of service.

He was also a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. In 1951, he met the love of his life “Gert” at Greenwood High School. They were married in 1953 and spent the last 65 years making memories.

He was a lover of fishing, hunting, wrestling, animals, and most of all his family. He was the last member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Marshall Douglas Holmes; his step-mother, Lucy Mae “Pete” Holmes and brothers, Walter Eugene, James Kenneth, and Henry Doyle (who died in infancy).

In addition to his wife of 65 years, he is survived by three children, Henry Holmes of Abbeville, Pamela “Claudette” Hasting (Floyd) of Saluda, and Roxine Timms (Rickey) of Waterloo; seven grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Thad Strickland officiating.

Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Coldwater United Methodist Church Cemetery in Elberton, GA. Pallbearers will be Jason Madden, Colby Madden, Douglas Timms, Dusty Timms, and J.W. Wallace. The family wishes to offer their sincere thanks to Dr. Mark Bartz and the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont.

The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until 8:00pm Saturday at the funeral home.
