Douglas “Doug”‘s Obituary Douglas “Doug” Koch, 89, passed away on May 29, 2019 at Southridge Nursing Home in Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation will take place at Heritage Funeral Home on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. with a short prayer service and time of sharing from 4:30-5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2019 at Asbury United Methodist Church, Sioux Falls. Burial will be in Mitchell, SD at Graceland Cemetery following the funeral and luncheon at the church.

Douglas was born in Sioux City, IA and raised in Mitchell, SD by his parents Walter and Sarah Viola Koch. After graduating in 1949 from Mitchell High School he enlisted in the Marine Corps serving in Korea until he was medical discharged. Doug married Lorna Cassem in 1952.

To this union was blessed with 8 children. Early in their marriage Doug attended SDSU earning an Ag Degree and working as a ranch hand in Gregory, SD. Before farming in Mitchell he farmed in Howard, SD.

Upon retiring due to deteriorated leg injury he worked for the Miner County Highway Department. Doug was very proud of his service history and was an active member in the Marine Corp League where he served as the Chaplain for many years, American Legion and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Doug was also awarded with the Veteran of the Year award three times!

Lorna and Doug were active members of Asbury Methodist Church where they served as ushers and also on a number of committees, the two also served as 4H Leaders in Mitchell and Howard. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider a donation to the DAV Sioux Falls Chapter 1 1519 West 51st Street Sioux Falls, SD 57105. Doug is survived by his 8 children, Richard (Judy) Koch, Mark (Jane) Koch, Cynthia Francis, Constance Klinkhammer-Berg, Cathleen Zepeda, Mike (Barb) Koch, Randy (Vickie) Koch, Carrie Vilhauer.

27 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, brother, Dayton Koch, one nephew David Koch and one niece Melissa Koch-Metz. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Lorna, brother in law Dick Cassem, sister-in laws Avis Cassem and Carolyn Koch.
